What You’d Do for Free

“As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.”1 Peter 4:10 (KJV)

Picture someone offered a job with good pay and an impressive title. Every week they come home drained and anxious. Then one weekend they spend a few hours doing something they’re naturally good at, helping a handful of people, and they come alive. They would have done it for free.

Pay and prestige are poor guides to calling. They tell you what the world will reward. They don’t tell you what God built you for.

Peter puts calling in simple terms: “As every man hath received the gift, even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.” Your gifts aren’t accidents. They were given to be used in serving others.

This month, pay attention to the work that gives you life when you do it for others. It may point you toward the gift God wants you to steward, whether or not it ever shows up on a business card.

Read it yourself

Read 1 Peter 4:10–11. What two kinds of gifts does Peter mention, and how should each be used?

Reflect

What work leaves you more alive than when you started? What might that say about your gifts?

Pray

Lord, you gave me gifts on purpose. Show me how to use them to serve others, wherever you put me. Amen.
