Every Idol Is a Mirror

“For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”Mark 8:36 (KJV)

We usually think of idols as things outside us: money, a body, a career, a relationship. But look closer and many of them are really about us. We chase the number because of what we think it will make us. We chase the look because of how we want to be seen.

In the end, a lot of idolatry is self-worship wearing a costume. And it never pays what it promises. Jesus asked, “For what shall it profit a man, if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul?”

Jonah learned this inside a fish. In his prayer from the deep he said, “They that observe lying vanities forsake their own mercy.” Chasing what can’t save you means walking away from the God who can.

Ask yourself honestly about the thing you’re pursuing hardest right now: is it for God’s name, or for mine?

Read it yourself

Read Jonah 2. List what Jonah says God did for him, and how the prayer ends.

Reflect

What are you chasing right now, and what do you hope it will make of you?

Pray

Lord, I don’t want to forsake my own mercy for lying vanities. Be the one I chase. Amen.
