What If It’s All Made Up?

“And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.”1 Corinthians 15:14 (KJV)

Sooner or later a child asks the hard one. Dad, what if it’s all made up? Mom, how do we know it’s true? It can feel like a threat. It is really an invitation.

You don’t have to panic or pretend the question is silly. Paul asked it himself, out loud, in Scripture. “And if Christ be not risen, then is our preaching vain, and your faith is also vain.” He even says, “ye are yet in your sins.” He lets everything hang on one question: did Jesus rise?

Then he answers it. “But now is Christ risen from the dead, and become the firstfruits of them that slept.” And he points to witnesses people could still go and ask. Our faith isn’t afraid of being checked. That is the whole spirit of counting it yourself.

When your kids ask, take them to the text. Read 1 Corinthians 15 together. Peter says to be “ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” That includes the little ones at your own table.

Read it yourself

Read 1 Corinthians 15:3–8 with your family and list every person or group Paul says the risen Christ was seen of.

Reflect

What hard question about faith have your children (or you) been afraid to ask out loud?

Pray

Lord, make me ready to give an answer with meekness. Help me point my family to the risen Christ. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
