The LORD Is Their Inheritance
“The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and his inheritance. Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.”Deuteronomy 18:1–2 (KJV)
When Israel divided the land, one tribe got none. “The priests the Levites, and all the tribe of Levi, shall have no part nor inheritance with Israel: they shall eat the offerings of the LORD made by fire.” No fields, no farms.
But they weren’t left with nothing. “Therefore shall they have no inheritance among their brethren: the LORD is their inheritance, as he hath said unto them.” They had something better than land. They had God himself.
Peter says believers are now “a royal priesthood.” Our portion is the same as Levi’s: the LORD. And we live from an offering that went through the fire for us. “For Christ also hath once suffered for sins, the just for the unjust, that he might bring us to God.”
If you feel like you’ve missed out on what others have, remember Levi. The one who has the LORD has the best inheritance there is.
Read it yourself
Read Deuteronomy 18:1–8. What portion did the priests receive from the people’s offerings?
Is God himself enough for you, even if other things are missing?
Lord, you are my inheritance. Thank you that Christ suffered once to bring me to you. Amen.
