Two Full Years

“And the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man; and he was in the house of his master the Egyptian. And his master saw that the LORD was with him, and that the LORD made all that he did to prosper in his hand.”Genesis 39:2–3 (KJV)

Joseph did his job well wherever he was put. In Potiphar’s house, “the LORD was with Joseph, and he was a prosperous man.” Even in prison, “the LORD was with Joseph, and shewed him mercy.” He served faithfully in places he never chose.

In prison he helped the king’s butler and asked one favour: “But think on me when it shall be well with thee… and make mention of me unto Pharaoh.” The butler was restored. And then: “Yet did not the chief butler remember Joseph, but forgat him.”

The next verse says, “And it came to pass at the end of two full years, that Pharaoh dreamed.” Two full years of faithful work in a place nobody noticed. Then, in one day, “they brought him hastily out of the dungeon.”

Maybe you are doing good work that no one seems to remember. God hasn’t forgotten. He keeps the calendar, and he knows the day.

Count it yourself

Two full years passed between the butler forgetting Joseph and Pharaoh’s dream (Genesis 41:1).

Reflect

Where are you serving faithfully without being noticed? How does Joseph’s story speak to that?

Pray

Lord, you were with Joseph in the prison, and you are with me. Help me work faithfully while I wait for your timing. Amen.
