The Paint-the-Room Test

“Do all things without murmurings and disputings:”Philippians 2:14 (KJV)

It is the end of a long day. Your spouse asks for help with a task you find boring, like painting a room or sorting the garage. You say yes. But you say it in that tone, and everyone in the house can hear what you really mean.

There is a difference between doing what you’re asked and doing it willingly. Grudging help is still help, but it costs the relationship something every time.

Paul has a short word for this: “Do all things without murmurings and disputings.” And for marriage and the church: “Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.” Willing service is a way of honouring God, not just your spouse.

The next time you feel that inner groan when someone asks for your help, notice it. That resistance is often comfort being threatened. Pick up the brush anyway, and do it with a good heart.

Read it yourself

Read Philippians 2:12–16. What does Paul say we will shine as when we do all things without murmuring?

Reflect

Where do you tend to help grudgingly at home? What would it look like to do it willingly?

Pray

Lord, take away my murmuring. Help me serve the people I love with a willing heart. Amen.
