The Goal You Missed

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.”Proverbs 16:9 (KJV)

Picture a business owner who sets a big revenue goal and misses it. On paper it is a failure. But by the end of the year he has a smaller team he trusts, systems that work, a calmer home and a clearer sense of why he does what he does.

Sometimes the goal we miss gives us something better than the goal we set. We plan one way and God leads another.

“A man’s heart deviseth his way: but the LORD directeth his steps.” And again: “There are many devices in a man’s heart; nevertheless the counsel of the LORD, that shall stand.” Plans are good. God’s direction is better.

Set your goals and work toward them. But hold them with an open hand. If you miss one, look for what God gave you instead.

Read it yourself

Read Proverbs 16:1–9. What does verse 3 tell us to do with our works?

Reflect

Is there a goal you missed that turned out to give you something better?

Pray

Lord, I make my plans, but you direct my steps. Help me trust your counsel over my own. Amen.
