The Strongest Man in the House
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.”John 15:13 (KJV)
There’s a picture of manhood that says the strongest man is the one in control. He has it all figured out, he’s never wrong, and everyone works around him. Jesus shows us a very different kind of strength.
“Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends.” The Son of God “made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant… he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross.” He said, “For even the Son of man came not to be ministered unto, but to minister.”
That is the pattern for a father and a husband. God first. Then his wife. Then his children. And himself last, laid down in love. It isn’t weakness. It takes more strength to serve than to be served.
On this Father’s Day, the best gift a dad can give is to look a little more like Jesus: strong enough to lay himself down for the people he loves.
Read it yourself
Read Philippians 2:5–11. After Christ humbled himself, what did God do?
Fathers: where could you lay yourself down for your family this week? Everyone: who has shown you this kind of love?
Lord Jesus, you laid down your life for us. Teach fathers to lead the way you do, by serving. Amen.
