The Night the King Couldn’t Sleep
“On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.”Esther 6:1 (KJV)
The book of Esther never names God. Not once. Yet look at what happens on one particular night. Haman has built his gallows and is coming in the morning to ask for Mordecai’s life. And then: “On that night could not the king sleep, and he commanded to bring the book of records of the chronicles; and they were read before the king.”
Of all the pages in the royal records, the one read aloud that night is the one where Mordecai saved the king’s life. By morning, everything has turned.
A sleepless night. A random page. Nobody in the story says God did it, and the writer doesn’t either. But no reader misses it. Mordecai had already said it to Esther: “who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”
God isn’t absent just because his name isn’t in the room. Some of the biggest turns in your story may come on a night when nothing seemed to be happening at all.
Count it yourself
The name of God is written 0 times in the book of Esther (Esther 1–10).
Where might God be working in your life right now through things that look like coincidence?
Lord, even when I can’t see your hand, you are at work. Help me trust you on the quiet nights. Amen.
