You Can’t Out-Train a Bitter Heart

“A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.”Proverbs 17:22 (KJV)

You can eat well, sleep well and train hard and still be carrying something that eats you from the inside. A grudge you won’t put down. A hurt you keep replaying. Bitterness doesn’t show up on a scale, but it weighs a lot.

Proverbs puts it simply: “A merry heart doeth good like a medicine: but a broken spirit drieth the bones.” The inside and the outside are more connected than we like to think.

Hebrews warns against letting “any root of bitterness springing up trouble you, and thereby many be defiled.” Roots spread. Bitterness rarely stays private. It leaks into our homes and our friendships.

Paul gives the way out: “Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you… And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ’s sake hath forgiven you.” You train your body for strength. Ask God to train your heart to forgive.

Read it yourself

Read Ephesians 4:29–32. What does Paul say grieves the Holy Spirit?

Reflect

Is there a grudge you have been carrying that you need to put down?

Pray

Lord, pull up any root of bitterness in me. Help me forgive as you have forgiven me. Amen.
