Silver That Never Satisfies

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.”Ecclesiastes 5:10 (KJV)

Solomon had more money than almost anyone who has ever lived. So his conclusion carries weight: “He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.”

Notice what he doesn’t say. He doesn’t say silver is evil. He says the person who loves it will never have enough of it. The raise helps for a while, then the target moves. The house is great for a season, then you start looking at a bigger one.

Ecclesiastes opens with a word it keeps coming back to: “Vanity of vanities, saith the Preacher, vanity of vanities; all is vanity.” Everything under the sun is too light to carry the weight of your soul. That isn’t a reason to despair. It is a reason to put your weight on something heavier.

Work, earn, save and give. Just don’t ask money to satisfy you. It can’t. Only God can.

Read it yourself

Read Ecclesiastes 5:10–20. What does Solomon say is the gift of God in verses 18–19?

Reflect

Has your sense of enough kept moving? What is that telling you?

Pray

Lord, money cannot satisfy me. You can. Help me hold silver loosely and rest my weight on you. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
