Carrying Water on His Word
“And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews, containing two or three firkins apiece.”John 2:6 (KJV)
At the wedding in Cana, the wine ran out. “And there were set there six waterpots of stone, after the manner of the purifying of the Jews.” Jesus told the servants, “Fill the waterpots with water. And they filled them up to the brim.”
Then the strange part: “Draw out now, and bear unto the governor of the feast. And they bare it.” Imagine being that servant. As far as you know, you are carrying a cup of water to the man in charge of the party.
Only when it was tasted was it found to be wine. John notes that the ruler “knew not whence it was… the servants which drew the water knew.” The ones who obeyed before they saw the change were the ones who knew where it came from.
Faith often works that way. You carry what looks like water on his word, and only later see what he did with it. “This beginning of miracles did Jesus in Cana of Galilee, and manifested forth his glory; and his disciples believed on him.”
Count it yourself
Jesus had six waterpots of stone filled with water (John 2:6–7) before anyone saw a change.
Where is God asking you to carry water on his word before you see the wine?
Lord Jesus, help me obey before I see. Let me be one of the servants who knows where the wine came from. Amen.
