Rich or Poor, the Same Temptation
“And he said unto them, Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.”Luke 12:15 (KJV)
We usually think of loving money as a rich person’s problem. But someone with very little can be just as consumed by it: always worried, always calculating, always sure that a bit more would fix everything.
Money itself isn’t the issue. Worship is. Whether you have a lot or a little, money can quietly take the place in your heart that belongs to God.
Jesus warned a crowd, “Take heed, and beware of covetousness: for a man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth.” Your life isn’t the total of what you own, or what you don’t.
The better aim is faithfulness. “Moreover it is required in stewards, that a man be found faithful.” Not rich. Not poor. Faithful. Steward what you have been given well, whatever the amount, and let the outcome be God’s business.
Read it yourself
Read Luke 12:13–21. What did the rich man plan to do, and what did God call him?
Does money hold too big a place in your thoughts, whether you have plenty or little?
Lord, my life is not in what I own. Make me a faithful steward of whatever you have given me. Amen.
