Don’t Shop Hungry

“Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.”Psalm 119:11 (KJV)

Anyone who has gone grocery shopping hungry knows what happens. You come home with a cart full of things that looked good in the moment and don’t actually feed you.

Temptation works the same way. If you walk into your day spiritually empty, you will grab whatever is closest. If you walk in fed, the cravings lose some of their pull.

The psalmist knew this. “Thy word have I hid in mine heart, that I might not sin against thee.” He fed on the word ahead of time, before the temptation arrived.

Jeremiah describes it as a meal: “Thy words were found, and I did eat them; and thy word was unto me the joy and rejoicing of mine heart.” Eat before you shop. Spend even a few minutes in Scripture before you face the day, and see what you reach for differently.

Read it yourself

Read Psalm 119:9–16. List what the psalmist says he will do with God’s word.

Reflect

Do you usually start your day fed or hungry?

Pray

Lord, feed me with your word before the day begins. Let it be the joy of my heart. Amen.
