God Loves the Stranger

“He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment. Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.”Deuteronomy 10:18–19 (KJV)

Moses described God in a way that might surprise us. “He doth execute the judgment of the fatherless and widow, and loveth the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.” God feeds and clothes the outsider.

Then he told Israel to do the same, and gave the reason: “Love ye therefore the stranger: for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.” They were to remember what it was like to be the outsider.

Paul tells Gentile believers that they were strangers too, spiritually. “at that time ye were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world.”

And then the good news: “Now therefore ye are no more strangers and foreigners, but fellowcitizens with the saints, and of the household of God.” God fed and clothed us when we were strangers. Christ is our bread, and we have put him on. Now we are family. So look around for the stranger near you.

Read it yourself

Read Ephesians 2:11–22. What does Paul say Christ broke down in verse 14?

Who is the stranger in your life that you could welcome this week?

Pray

Father, you loved me when I was a stranger. Help me love the outsider the way you loved me. Amen.
