Living Everywhere but Here

“Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.”Matthew 6:34 (KJV)

C.S. Lewis once imagined the devil’s strategy for ruining a person, and one of its tactics was simple: keep him thinking about the future. A man living in tomorrow can’t love the people in front of him today.

That’s a quiet danger for parents. You don’t have to fail your family in some dramatic way. You just have to be somewhere else in your head: planning, worrying, rehearsing. Your body is at dinner, but your mind is at next week’s meeting.

Jesus said, “Take therefore no thought for the morrow: for the morrow shall take thought for the things of itself. Sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof.” God gives grace for today, today. “It is of the LORD’S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not.”

Love lives in the present. Put tomorrow down tonight, and be fully with the people at your table.

Read it yourself

Read Matthew 6:31–34. What does Jesus say your heavenly Father knows?

Reflect

Where is your mind when you’re with your family?

Pray

Lord, help me trust you with tomorrow so I can love the people in front of me today. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
