One Little Maid
“And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman’s wife. And she said unto her mistress, Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.”2 Kings 5:2–3 (KJV)
Before the river and the seven dips, there was a girl. “And the Syrians had gone out by companies, and had brought away captive out of the land of Israel a little maid; and she waited on Naaman’s wife.”
Think about her situation. Taken from home. Serving in the house of the commander whose army had taken her. She had every reason to be bitter. Instead, she spoke up: “Would God my lord were with the prophet that is in Samaria! for he would recover him of his leprosy.”
Her name is never given. She had no power and no position. But one sentence from her, spoken in a hard place, set the whole story in motion.
You may feel small, or stuck somewhere you didn’t choose. God can still use one honest word from you. Peter says, “be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” Be ready. Your one sentence might be the start of someone’s healing.
Count it yourself
One little maid told Naaman’s wife about the prophet (2 Kings 5:2–3).
Where has God placed you that seems small, and who there needs to hear about him?
Lord, use my words, even in hard places. Make me ready to speak of the hope I have in you. Amen.
