Light in Broken Pitchers
“And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.”Judges 7:16 (KJV)
Gideon’s battle plan made no military sense. “And he divided the three hundred men into three companies, and he put a trumpet in every man’s hand, with empty pitchers, and lamps within the pitchers.” No swords in that list.
The lamps were hidden inside clay jars. Then came the signal: “And the three companies blew the trumpets, and brake the pitchers, and held the lamps in their left hands.” The light only showed when the pitchers broke.
Paul uses a picture just like it: “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” We are the clay jars. The light inside is God’s.
Sometimes the breaking is how the light gets out. A hard season, a humbling failure, a weakness you can’t hide. If you feel cracked today, remember Gideon’s three hundred. It was the broken pitchers that lit up the valley.
Count it yourself
Gideon’s 300 men were divided into 3 companies (Judges 7:16).
Where might God be letting his light out through a broken place in your life?
Lord, I am an earthen vessel. Let your light shine through me, even through the cracks. Amen.
