Knowing When to Stop
“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”Psalm 46:10 (KJV)
Here’s an honest question. Which is harder for you: a brutal workout, or a whole day of doing nothing? For some people, pushing hard is easy. Stopping is the real test.
If the thought of an empty afternoon makes you anxious, that feeling is worth listening to. It may show you where your trust is. Some of us feel safe only when we are producing.
God says, “Be still, and know that I am God.” Stillness isn’t laziness. It is a way of remembering who holds things together. Jesus said to his tired disciples, “Come ye yourselves apart into a desert place, and rest a while: for there were many coming and going, and they had no leisure so much as to eat.”
Discipline isn’t only about starting. Sometimes it is about stopping, on purpose, because you trust that God doesn’t stop when you do.
Read it yourself
Read Psalm 46. What does God say he will be exalted among, and in?
Which is harder for you, pushing or stopping? What does that tell you?
Lord, teach me to be still and know that you are God. Help me stop when it’s time to stop. Amen.
