No Servile Work When the Trumpet Sounds

“And in the seventh month, on the first day of the month, ye shall have an holy convocation; ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you.”Numbers 29:1 (KJV)

Israel’s seventh month opened with trumpets. Along with the sound came a command: “ye shall do no servile work: it is a day of blowing the trumpets unto you.” Later in the same month, at the feast: “ye shall do no servile work, and ye shall keep a feast unto the LORD seven days.”

When the trumpet sounded, the work stopped. The announcement wasn’t a call to try harder. It was a call to stop striving and gather before God.

The good news works the same way. On the cross Jesus said, “It is finished.” And Hebrews tells us what happens when we believe it: “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.”

If you are still working to earn God’s favour, listen for the trumpet. The work that saves has already been done. Your part is to stop striving and enter his rest.

Count it yourself

“no servile work” appears 3 times in Numbers 29.

Reflect

Is there any way you’re still working to earn what Christ has finished?

Pray

Lord Jesus, it is finished. Help me stop striving and rest in what you have done. Amen.
