Into the Depths of the Sea
“The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.”Exodus 15:5 (KJV)
When Israel looked back at the Red Sea, Pharaoh’s army was gone. Moses sang about it: “The depths have covered them: they sank into the bottom as a stone.” The enemy that chased them out of Egypt would never chase them again.
Centuries later the prophet Micah used that same picture for sin. “He will turn again, he will have compassion upon us; he will subdue our iniquities; and thou wilt cast all their sins into the depths of the sea.” Sin is pictured like Pharaoh’s chariots. Sunk. Gone.
God says it himself through Isaiah: “I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins.” And then he tells his people what to do with the past: “Remember ye not the former things… Behold, I will do a new thing.”
If you keep wading back into the sea to drag up what God has sunk, stop. He put it there for good. Walk on to the new thing he is doing.

Read Micah 7:18–20. What does Micah say God delights in?
What forgiven sin do you keep dragging back up from the depths?
Lord, you have cast my sins into the depths of the sea. Help me leave them there and follow you into the new thing. Amen.
