Greater and Mightier Than Thou
“When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou goest to possess it, and hath cast out many nations before thee, the Hittites, and the Girgashites, and the Amorites, and the Canaanites, and the Perizzites, and the Hivites, and the Jebusites, seven nations greater and mightier than thou;”Deuteronomy 7:1 (KJV)
Before Israel entered the land, Moses told them the truth about what they faced: “the LORD thy God… hath cast out many nations before thee… seven nations greater and mightier than thou.” Not weaker. Greater and mightier.
That is honest. God didn’t promise them easy enemies. He promised that he would be the one to drive them out.
Many readers see a picture here of our own fight with the flesh. Paul was just as honest: “For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.” Some of our battles are greater and mightier than we are.
Paul cried out, “O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?” And he answered his own question in the next breath: “I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord.” The victory doesn’t depend on you being stronger. It depends on who fights for you.

What battle in your life feels greater and mightier than you?
Lord, some of my battles are bigger than me. I thank you through Jesus Christ, who fights for me. Amen.
