Five Daughters at the Door
“Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.”Numbers 27:4 (KJV)
Zelophehad died in the wilderness with no sons, so under the usual rules his family line would get no land. His daughters had no legal claim. They came anyway, to the door of the tabernacle, and asked.
“Why should the name of our father be done away from among his family, because he hath no son? Give unto us therefore a possession among the brethren of our father.” Moses took it to the LORD, and God’s answer was clear: “The daughters of Zelophehad speak right: thou shalt surely give them a possession of an inheritance.”
They had nothing to stand on but the kindness of the one they asked. That is exactly how we come to God. Jesus called himself the door, and Hebrews invites us: “Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need.”
You don’t come because you’ve earned a place. You come because he has made a way. Come boldly.
Read it yourself
Read Numbers 27:1–11. What new rule did God give for every family in Israel because of these daughters?
What have you been afraid to ask God for because you feel you have no claim to it?
Lord, I have no claim of my own. Thank you that I can come boldly to your throne of grace. Amen.
