What You Reach For First

“My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”Psalm 5:3 (KJV)

Think about the first thing your hand does in the morning. For a lot of us it is the phone. Before our feet hit the floor, the news, the messages and the feed have already had their say.

That habit trains the heart. Whatever gets the first minutes of the day tends to set its tone. David chose to give that time to God: “My voice shalt thou hear in the morning, O LORD; in the morning will I direct my prayer unto thee, and will look up.”

Jesus did the same. “And in the morning, rising up a great while before day, he went out, and departed into a solitary place, and there prayed.” He had crowds waiting and a mission to finish, and he still started with his Father.

December gets loud. Try one change this month: let God have the first word before the phone does. Leave it across the room, open your Bible, and look up.

Read it yourself

Read Psalm 5:1–3. Write down the three things David says he will do in the morning.

Reflect

What gets the first five minutes of your day, and what is it training your heart to want?

Pray

Lord, let my voice reach you before anything else reaches me. Train my heart to look up first. Amen.
