The Spirit of Prophecy
“And I fell at his feet to worship him. And he said unto me, See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”Revelation 19:10 (KJV)
Near the end of the Bible, John is so overwhelmed by what he sees that he falls down to worship the angel speaking to him. The angel stops him at once.
“See thou do it not: I am thy fellowservant, and of thy brethren that have the testimony of Jesus: worship God: for the testimony of Jesus is the spirit of prophecy.”
That last line is a key to the whole Bible. Prophecy isn’t mainly about predicting events or decoding charts. Its spirit, its heartbeat, is the testimony of Jesus. Every promise of a coming King, every shadow and sign, was pointing to him.
That is worth remembering in a month full of prophecies. Isaiah, Micah and Malachi weren’t writing puzzles for scholars. They were testifying about Jesus, long before he was born. When you read them this season, look for him. He is what they are about.
Read it yourself
Read Revelation 19:9–10. Why does the angel refuse John’s worship?
When you read prophecy, do you look for Jesus or for something else?
Lord Jesus, you are the heart of every prophecy. Open my eyes to see you in all the scriptures. Amen.
