Well, Not Just Long
“For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.”Philippians 1:21 (KJV)
A lot of fitness talk is about living longer: adding years, beating the averages. There is nothing wrong with wanting a long life. But a believer can aim for something better than just more years.
Job said of man, “Seeing his days are determined, the number of his months are with thee, thou hast appointed his bounds that he cannot pass.” God decides how long we live. We don’t.
What we can steward is how well we live the days we are given. Paul put it simply: “For to me to live is Christ, and to die is gain.” Living is for Christ. Dying is gain. That takes the fear out of both.
So take care of your body, if you can, so you can serve well, love your family well and finish well. Leave the length of your days with the one who wrote them down.
Read it yourself
Read Philippians 1:20–26. What two things was Paul torn between, and why did he think staying was needful?
Are you caring for your body out of fear of dying, or so you can serve Christ well while you live?
Lord, my days are in your hands. Help me live them well, for you. Amen.
