They Testify of Me
“Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”John 5:39 (KJV)
Jesus was talking to people who knew the scriptures better than almost anyone. They read them, studied them and memorized them. And he told them, “Search the scriptures; for in them ye think ye have eternal life: and they are they which testify of me.”
They had the right book and missed the main subject. “For had ye believed Moses, ye would have believed me: for he wrote of me.”
That is a warning for anyone who loves the Bible, including people who count its words. It is possible to know the text well and still miss Jesus. The point of all the patterns, numbers and prophecies is to bring us to him.
In this season of prophecies, read with that question in mind. Where is Jesus in this passage? Moses wrote of him. Isaiah wrote of him. The whole book testifies of him. Don’t stop at the pages. Come to the one they’re about.
Read it yourself
Read John 5:39–47. What does Jesus say the people would not do, even though the scriptures testify of him?
When you read the Bible, do you come away knowing more facts, or knowing Jesus better?
Lord Jesus, the scriptures testify of you. Don’t let me read them and miss you. Amen.
