The True Bread From Heaven

“And when the children of Israel saw it, they said one to another, It is manna: for they wist not what it was. And Moses said unto them, This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.”Exodus 16:15 (KJV)

When Israel first saw manna on the ground, they didn’t know what it was. Moses told them, “This is the bread which the LORD hath given you to eat.” For forty years, it was there every morning.

Centuries later the crowds in Galilee brought up the manna, hoping Jesus would do something like it. He answered, “Moses gave you not that bread from heaven; but my Father giveth you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he which cometh down from heaven, and giveth life unto the world.”

Then he said it plainly: “I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst.”

The manna kept them alive in the wilderness, but they still died. The bread Jesus offers is himself, and it gives life that doesn’t end. Every morning you need bread. Every morning you can come to him.

Read it yourself

Read John 6:47–51. What does Jesus say about those who ate manna, and about those who eat this bread?

Reflect

What are you looking to for daily bread that only Jesus can truly give?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you are the bread of life. I come to you today, hungry, and I know you will feed me. Amen.
