Talk to Your Soul
“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.”Psalm 42:5 (KJV)
Bad days come with a voice. It tells you everything is hopeless, nobody cares, nothing will change. And most of us simply listen to it.
David did something different. He talked back. “Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me? hope thou in God: for I shall yet praise him for the help of his countenance.” He cross-examined his own mood instead of obeying it.
That matters, because our feelings aren’t always telling the truth. “The heart is deceitful above all things, and desperately wicked: who can know it?” Your mood is real, but it is not the final word.
Next time a low day hits, try David’s pattern. Name what you are feeling. Ask your soul why. Then tell it what is true about God. You don’t have to pretend you feel fine. You just don’t have to let the feeling preach to you.
Read it yourself
Read Psalm 42 and Psalm 43. How many times do you find the question “Why art thou cast down”?
What has your soul been telling you lately that you need to answer with truth?
Lord, when my soul is cast down, help me speak your truth to it. I will yet praise you. Amen.
