The Strategy Is Noise

“Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth.”Psalm 46:10 (KJV)

We usually think the enemy’s main tool is temptation. But a famous Christian book imagines a senior devil advising a junior one that there is an easier way: keep the man busy and noisy, and he will never get still enough to hear God.

That rings true. Most days we aren’t so much tempted away from God as distracted away from him. A podcast in the car, the phone in the line, a show before bed. Never a minute of quiet.

When Elijah stood on the mountain, “a great and strong wind rent the mountains… but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake… after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.”

You can’t hear a still small voice in constant noise. “Be still, and know that I am God.” Try five minutes today with nothing playing. It may feel strange. That is how you know you needed it.

Read it yourself

Read 1 Kings 19:9–18. What did God tell Elijah after the still small voice?

Reflect

When was the last time you were truly quiet before God?

Pray

Lord, quiet me. Help me turn down the noise long enough to hear your voice. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
