The Rejected Stone

“The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.”Psalm 118:22 (KJV)

Builders pick stones carefully. Some fit. Some get tossed aside. The psalmist wrote of one stone that the experts threw away, and how God turned that choice upside down. “The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner.”

In the days after he rode into Jerusalem, Jesus taught in the temple, and the religious leaders challenged him. He quoted this psalm back to them: “Did ye never read in the scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner: this is the Lord’s doing, and it is marvellous in our eyes?”

Within days, the builders would reject him completely. But Peter, standing before the same council weeks later, said it plainly: “This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.”

The world still sets him aside. But God has made him the cornerstone. Everything that lasts is built on him.

Read it yourself

Read Acts 4:8–12. What does Peter say about salvation in any other name?

Reflect

Is Jesus the cornerstone of your life, or one stone among many?

Pray

Lord Jesus, the builders rejected you, but God made you the head of the corner. Be the cornerstone of my life. Amen.
