The Friend Who Ate My Bread

“Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”Psalm 41:9 (KJV)

Of all the pains in life, betrayal by a close friend may be the sharpest. David knew it. “Yea, mine own familiar friend, in whom I trusted, which did eat of my bread, hath lifted up his heel against me.”

To eat someone’s bread was to share their table and their trust. The betrayal came from inside the circle.

At the last supper, Jesus quoted those very words. “I speak not of you all: I know whom I have chosen: but that the scripture may be fulfilled, He that eateth bread with me hath lifted up his heel against me.” He knew who would betray him. He washed his feet anyway, and shared bread with him anyway.

If you have been hurt by someone close, Jesus knows that pain from the inside. He didn’t just read about betrayal. He sat at the table with it, and he loved to the end.

Read it yourself

Read John 13:1–5 and 13:18–30. What did Jesus do for the disciples before he spoke of the betrayal?

Reflect

Is there a betrayal you need to bring to the one who understands it fully?

Pray

Lord Jesus, you know what it is to be betrayed by a friend. Heal the wounds I carry, and teach me to love as you did. Amen.
