The Day of Small Things

“For who hath despised the day of small things? for they shall rejoice, and shall see the plummet in the hand of Zerubbabel with those seven; they are the eyes of the LORD, which run to and fro through the whole earth.”Zechariah 4:10 (KJV)

A lot of Bible reading plans die in January. We vow to read for an hour a day, keep it for a week, miss a day, then another, and quietly give up. The goal was too big to keep.

When the returning exiles laid the foundation of the temple, it looked small next to the old one. God’s word to them was, “For who hath despised the day of small things?” Small is how most good things start.

Try being the kind of person who reads for five minutes. Then ten. Then more, if it grows. A small habit you keep will change you more than a big one you drop. The goal of Psalm 1 isn’t a heroic schedule. It is a delight: “his delight is in the law of the LORD; and in his law doth he meditate day and night.”

Start small enough to keep going. Let delight do the rest.

Read it yourself

Read Psalm 1. What two pictures does it use for the righteous and the ungodly?

Reflect

What is the smallest daily step in God’s word you know you could keep every day this year?

Pray

Lord, I don’t want a perfect plan. I want a real delight in your word. Help me start small and keep going. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
