Adam’s First Full Day
“And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.”Genesis 1:31 (KJV)
Man was made on the sixth day. “And God saw every thing that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.” The very next day, God rested.
Think about what that means for Adam. His first full day on earth wasn’t a workday. It was a day of rest after a finished work, a work he didn’t do. He started his life resting in what God had already completed.
That is the gospel in the first two chapters of the Bible. Hebrews says, “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.” We don’t work our way toward God’s rest. We start there, because Christ has finished the work.
If you feel like you are always working to be accepted, go back to Adam’s first day. Rest comes first. The work flows out of it.
Count it yourself
“the seventh day” is named 3 times in Genesis 2:2–3, and that day is blessed and sanctified.
Do you live like rest is a reward you earn, or a place you start from?
Father, thank you that Christ has finished the work. Let me begin each day resting in it. Amen.
