Same Hours, Different Sleep
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it: except the LORD keep the city, the watchman waketh but in vain. It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.”Psalm 127:1–2 (KJV)
Picture two people working the same long hours in the same kind of job. One goes home and sleeps soundly. The other lies awake, replaying the day, running numbers in the dark. The difference isn’t the hours. It is who they believe is holding things together.
Psalm 127 speaks right to the second person. “It is vain for you to rise up early, to sit up late, to eat the bread of sorrows: for so he giveth his beloved sleep.” Notice it doesn’t say work is vain. It says anxious work is vain, the kind that believes everything rests on you.
“Except the LORD build the house, they labour in vain that build it.” When you know the Lord is the builder, you can work hard and still sleep. The weight was never yours to carry alone.
Tonight, before you sleep, hand the work back to him. He was holding it all along.

Read Psalm 127. What does the second half of the psalm call children?
What work worries keep you awake? What would it look like to trust God with them tonight?
Lord, you are the builder. I give you my work and my worries tonight. Give your beloved sleep. Amen.
