Praying Over Junk Food

“The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.”Matthew 6:22 (KJV)

There’s a joke about someone who prays over a plate of junk food, asking God to bless it to their body. It’s funny because we know prayer doesn’t change what’s on the plate.

The same goes for what we feed our minds. What comes in through our eyes and ears shapes how we see the world. That shapes how we think, which shapes what we do. Over time, what we do becomes who we are. None of it is neutral.

Jesus said, “The light of the body is the eye: if therefore thine eye be single, thy whole body shall be full of light.” David made a decision ahead of time: “I will set no wicked thing before mine eyes.”

Paul gives us the menu: “whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely… think on these things.” Feed your soul on that, and you won’t need to pray over the junk.

Read it yourself

Read Philippians 4:6–9. What does Paul promise will keep your heart and mind?

Reflect

What have you been feeding your mind that you wouldn’t want to feed your soul?

Pray

Lord, guard my eyes and ears. Help me fill my mind with what is true and pure. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
