Moth, Rust and Your Calendar

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal: For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.”Matthew 6:19–21 (KJV)

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt.”

We usually hear this as a verse about money, and it is. But time is a treasure too. The hours we pour into things that rust, and the hours we give to things that last, tell the same story as our bank account.

Jesus finishes with the line that explains it all: “For where your treasure is, there will your heart be also.” Our hearts follow our investments. Put your treasure into God and the people he gave you, and your heart will go there too.

Take a look at this month so far. Which hours went into treasure that will rust, and which went into treasure that won’t?

Read it yourself

Read Matthew 6:19–24. What does Jesus say about the eye in verses 22–23, right between treasure and the two masters?

Reflect

Where is your treasure going this month, and where is your heart following it?

Pray

Lord Jesus, I want treasure in heaven. Help me spend my money and my time on what lasts. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
