Disciplined at the Wrong Things
“No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.”Matthew 6:24 (KJV)
“I’m just not a disciplined person.” Maybe. But you might be up before sunrise to check email, and you probably never forget to scroll before bed. That is discipline. It is just pointed somewhere else.
Jesus said, “No man can serve two masters: for either he will hate the one, and love the other; or else he will hold to the one, and despise the other. Ye cannot serve God and mammon.” We all serve something faithfully. The question is what gets our best discipline.
That is actually good news. You don’t need to become a different kind of person to be disciplined in prayer or in God’s word. You need to point the discipline you already have toward a different master.
Look at the things you never skip. Then ask whether God is on that list.
Read it yourself
Read Luke 16:10–13. What does Jesus say about being faithful in little things?
What do you do faithfully every day without fail? What would change if God got that same faithfulness?
Lord, you are my master. Take the discipline I already have and point it toward you. Amen.
