Money Turns Up the Volume

“For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.”1 Timothy 6:10 (KJV)

People often say money is the root of all evil. The verse doesn’t say that. It says, “For the love of money is the root of all evil.” Money itself is more like an amplifier. It makes whatever is already in the heart louder.

Give a generous person more, and you get more generosity. Give a proud or anxious person more, and you get more pride and more anxiety. So the better question isn’t whether money is good or bad. It is who you will be with more of it.

Agur prayed a prayer most of us would never think to pray: “give me neither poverty nor riches; feed me with food convenient for me: Lest I be full, and deny thee, and say, Who is the LORD? or lest I be poor, and steal.” He knew both ends could pull his heart away.

Before you ask God for more, ask him to work on the heart that more would amplify.

Read it yourself

Read 1 Timothy 6:6–10. What does Paul call great gain, and what happens to those who will be rich?

Reflect

If your income doubled, what in your heart would get louder?

Pray

Lord, I don’t want to love money. Shape my heart so that whatever you give only makes it louder for you. Amen.
