A Promise Kept

“In whose eyes a vile person is contemned; but he honoureth them that fear the LORD. He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.”Psalm 15:4 (KJV)

Discipline is often just this: keeping the promises you make, including the ones you make to yourself. I’ll get up. I’ll read. I’ll call. Each promise kept builds a little trust. Each one broken chips some away.

Psalm 15 describes the person who can dwell with God, and one line stands out: “He that sweareth to his own hurt, and changeth not.” He keeps his word even when it costs him.

Jesus made it simpler: “But let your communication be, Yea, yea; Nay, nay.” Say what you mean, and then do what you said.

You will miss sometimes. Everyone does. The danger isn’t one missed day. It is the day the broken promise stops bothering you. If you’ve slipped, don’t make a bigger promise. Keep a small one today, and let your yes start meaning yes again.

Read it yourself

Read Psalm 15. List the things the psalm says about the person who may abide in God’s tabernacle.

Reflect

What promise to yourself or someone else has quietly stopped bothering you?

Pray

Lord, make me a person whose word can be trusted. Help me keep today’s promise, even a small one. Amen.
