Mercy Unto Thousands

“Thou shalt not bow down thyself unto them, nor serve them: for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me, And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.”Deuteronomy 5:9–10 (KJV)

The second commandment carries a warning and a promise, and the numbers in them are not the same size. God visits “the iniquity of the fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that hate me.” Then comes the other side: “And shewing mercy unto thousands of them that love me and keep my commandments.”

Three or four generations of consequences. Thousands of mercy. Deuteronomy 7 stretches it even further: God “keepeth covenant and mercy with them that love him and keep his commandments to a thousand generations.”

The math is lopsided on purpose. God’s judgment is real, but it is measured. His mercy runs far past it. James puts it in four words: “mercy rejoiceth against judgment.”

Some of us carry the weight of what our families passed down. The pattern is real. But it isn’t the last word. Mercy is bigger, and it reaches further. You can be the generation where it turns.

Count it yourself

“thousands of them that love me” appears 2 times in the Bible, both in the commandments (Exodus 20:6; Deuteronomy 5:10).

Reflect

What pattern in your family would you like mercy to end with you?

Pray

Faithful God, your mercy runs to a thousand generations. Let it reach my family through me. Amen.

Every verse is quoted from the King James Bible and checked word for word. Open your Bible beside it and count it yourself.
