Look Back at the Road
“And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart, whether thou wouldest keep his commandments, or no.”Deuteronomy 8:2 (KJV)
When you are climbing toward a goal, it is easy to look only up. How far is left, how much you haven’t done yet, how far behind you are. Measured only against the top, every step feels like failure.
Before Israel crossed into the land, Moses told them to look back. “And thou shalt remember all the way which the LORD thy God led thee these forty years in the wilderness, to humble thee, and to prove thee, to know what was in thine heart.” Remembering the road was part of getting ready for what was ahead.
That isn’t pride. It is gratitude. “Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.” Looking back at the ground you have covered with God’s help gives you strength for the ground that is left.
Before you push on toward the next goal, stop and measure the gain, not just the gap. Write down where you were a year ago, and what God has brought you through since.
Read it yourself
Read Deuteronomy 8:2–4. What does verse 4 say about Israel’s clothes and feet during those years?
Where were you a year ago, and what has God helped you through since?
Lord, I will not forget your benefits. Help me remember the way you’ve led me, and trust you for the rest. Amen.
