Marriage Is a Mirror

“And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?”Matthew 7:3 (KJV)

In an argument, it’s easy to treat marriage like a courtroom. You lay out the evidence, make your case, and wait for the verdict that you were right.

But marriage is more like a mirror. It holds your face still long enough for you to see your own selfishness, impatience and pride. The person you’re most at odds with is often the one looking back at you.

Jesus gave the first step in any conflict: “And why beholdest thou the mote that is in thy brother’s eye, but considerest not the beam that is in thine own eye?” Then, “Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother’s eye.”

Next time tension rises at home, look in the mirror first. Ask God to show you your part. It changes the whole conversation.

Read it yourself

Read Matthew 7:1–5. What does Jesus say about the measure we use to judge others?

Reflect

In your last disagreement at home, what was your part?

Pray

Lord, show me the beam in my own eye before I point at anyone else’s. Make me humble at home. Amen.
