Live for Them

“Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.”Proverbs 17:6 (KJV)

Plenty of parents say they would die for their kids. Few of us will ever be asked to. The harder question is whether we will take care of ourselves so we can live for them.

Neglect is quiet. The skipped walks, the years of bad sleep, the stress we never deal with. None of it seems urgent. But it can slowly shorten the years we have to give, or the strength we have to give in them.

Scripture paints a picture of a long, full family life as a blessing. “Children’s children are the crown of old men; and the glory of children are their fathers.” “Thy wife shall be as a fruitful vine by the sides of thine house: thy children like olive plants round about thy table.”

Our days are in God’s hands, and some things are out of our control. But some aren’t. Take care of your body as a gift to the people at your table.

Read it yourself

Read Psalm 128. Who does the psalm say will be blessed in this way?

Reflect

What is one way you could care for your body this week for the sake of the people you love?

Pray

Lord, my body is a gift for my family as well as for you. Help me care for it with love. Amen.
