He Ended His Work

“And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.”Genesis 2:2 (KJV)

The Bible’s first week ends with a finished work. “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made.” God wasn’t tired. The work was complete.

On the cross, Jesus finished another work. “When Jesus therefore had received the vinegar, he said, It is finished: and he bowed his head, and gave up the ghost.” Nothing left to add.

Hebrews connects the two. “For he that is entered into his rest, he also hath ceased from his own works, as God did from his.” Because Christ finished, we can stop trying to finish what only he could do.

As this month of work comes to a close, remember that your work is not your salvation. You can work hard and well because the most important work is already done.

Read it yourself

Read Hebrews 4:1–11. What does the writer say we should labour to enter?

Reflect

Is there any part of you still working to finish what Christ already finished?

Pray

Lord Jesus, it is finished. Thank you. Let me rest in your work, and work from that rest. Amen.
