Leaves but No Fruit

“And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”Genesis 3:7 (KJV)

After the fall, Adam and Eve tried to fix their shame themselves. “And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together, and made themselves aprons.”

God didn’t accept the leaves. He replaced them. “Unto Adam also and to his wife did the LORD God make coats of skins, and clothed them.” A covering they made was swapped for a covering he made.

Centuries later, Jesus came to a fig tree. “And seeing a fig tree afar off having leaves, he came, if haply he might find any thing thereon: and when he came to it, he found nothing but leaves.” From a distance it looked fine. Up close there was no fruit.

Leaves are what we make to look right. Fruit is what grows when we are covered by what God provides. Don’t settle for a show of leaves. Let him clothe you, and let the fruit come.

Read it yourself

Read Mark 11:12–14, 20–24. What did Peter notice the next morning, and what did Jesus say about faith?

Reflect

Where are you relying on leaves, the appearance of being right with God?

Pray

Lord, I don’t want leaves without fruit. Clothe me with what you provide, and grow real fruit in me. Amen.
