For the Family
“But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”1 Timothy 5:8 (KJV)
It is the reason almost every man gives. I’m doing it for the family. The long hours, the second business, the strict training schedule, the trips. And there is truth in it. Scripture is clear that providing matters: “But if any provide not for his own, and specially for those of his own house, he hath denied the faith, and is worse than an infidel.”
But providing can become a cover for something else. The man building an empire while his marriage turns into two roommates. The man whose workouts come first and whose family resents it. Each one says he is doing it for the family.
Proverbs gives the warning: “He that is greedy of gain troubleth his own house.” A good thing pursued in the wrong way can trouble the very people it was meant to bless.
Ask your family, not yourself, whether what you are doing for them feels like it is for them.
Read it yourself
Read 1 Timothy 5:1–8. What does Paul say about caring for those of your own house?
If you asked your family what you are working for, what would they say?
Lord, help me provide for my family in a way that blesses them, not one that troubles them. Amen.
