False Witness

“And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.”Genesis 39:20 (KJV)

Joseph did the right thing and paid for it. When he refused Potiphar’s wife, she lied about him. “And Joseph’s master took him, and put him into the prison, a place where the king’s prisoners were bound: and he was there in the prison.”

Centuries later, the same thing happened to Jesus, only worse. At his trial before the council, “many bare false witness against him, but their witness agreed not together.” They couldn’t even get their lies to match, and he was condemned anyway.

Joseph’s story shows that being falsely accused isn’t the end of what God is doing. The prison became the road to the palace. Jesus’s story shows that God can take the worst injustice in history and turn it into salvation.

If someone is telling lies about you, you are in good company. Do what is right, leave your reputation with God and wait to see what he does with it.

Read it yourself

Read Genesis 39:20–23. What does the text say the LORD did for Joseph in the prison?

Reflect

Is there an accusation against you that you need to leave in God’s hands?

Pray

Lord, you know the truth. I leave my name with you. Be with me as you were with Joseph in the prison. Amen.
