Comfort for the Toil of Our Hands

“And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.”Genesis 5:29 (KJV)

When Noah was born, his father Lamech gave him a name full of hope. “And he called his name Noah, saying, This same shall comfort us concerning our work and toil of our hands, because of the ground which the LORD hath cursed.”

Ever since the fall, work had been hard. Thorns, sweat, cursed ground. Lamech longed for relief, and he hoped this boy would bring it.

Noah’s story is full of rest. “But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.” After the flood, “the ark rested in the seventh month… upon the mountains of Ararat.” Grace, then rest.

Noah was a picture of the one who would truly bring comfort from the curse. Hebrews says, “For we which have believed do enter into rest.” The hard work of this world is real. But in Christ there is comfort and rest for weary hands.

Read it yourself

Read Genesis 5:28–32. How old was Lamech when Noah was born?

Reflect

Where do you most need comfort from the toil of your hands?

Pray

Lord, the ground is still hard and the work is still heavy. Thank you for the rest and comfort we find in Christ. Amen.
