A Little Folding of the Hands
“I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding;”Proverbs 24:30 (KJV)
Solomon took a walk past a neighbour’s vineyard and stopped to look. “I went by the field of the slothful, and by the vineyard of the man void of understanding; And, lo, it was all grown over with thorns, and nettles had covered the face thereof, and the stone wall thereof was broken down.”
He didn’t walk on. “Then I saw, and considered it well: I looked upon it, and received instruction.” And here is what he learned: “Yet a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to sleep: So shall thy poverty come as one that travelleth.”
The vineyard didn’t fall apart in a day. It was a little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands, season after season. Weeds come slowly. So does fruit.
Take a walk through your own field today. Your prayer life, your marriage, your health, your work. What will it look like in a year if nothing changes? A little diligence now goes a long way.
Read it yourself
Read Proverbs 6:6–11. What does Solomon tell the sluggard to go and watch?
Which part of your “vineyard” has been slowly growing over with weeds?
Lord, help me see my field clearly and tend it faithfully, a little at a time. Amen.
